Overview of the Incentive
If you live in an eligible census tract, the federal 30C EV charger tax credit can cover 30% of the cost of your charging hardware and installation (up to $1,000 for residential properties).
But with dozens of brands on the market, which charger should you buy? Important note: The IRS does not maintain an "approved list" of brands. Any new, original-use equipment that recharges an EV qualifies as hardware. Your actual eligibility depends entirely on your location and installation date. Below, we compare the top-rated chargers that qualify.
Top Level 2 Chargers Compared
| Charger | Typical Use | Connection | Tax Credit Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Wall Connector | Tesla & NACS vehicles | Hardwired only | Requires electrician labor, increasing your 30% qualified cost basis. |
| ChargePoint Home Flex | Smart home integration | Plug-in or Hardwired | Highly eligible for local utility rebates in addition to the federal credit. |
| Emporia Level 2 | Budget-conscious buyers | Plug-in or Hardwired | Lower hardware cost means a lower total tax credit, but great overall value. |
| Grizzl-E Classic | Harsh weather / Outdoors | Plug-in or Hardwired | Durable choice for outdoor installations requiring weather-proof conduit. |
| JuiceBox 40 | App-heavy users | Plug-in or Hardwired | Often heavily subsidized by state utility demand-response programs. |
Hardwired vs. Plug-in: Which is Better for the Tax Credit?
When buying a charger, you often have to choose between a hardwired model (wired directly into your electrical panel) and a plug-in model (plugs into a 240V dryer-style outlet like a NEMA 14-50).
From a tax perspective, both qualify. However, hardwired chargers generally require more labor to install, which increases your total qualified costs. Since the federal government covers 30% of these costs (up to $1,000), a hardwired installation allows you to extract more value from the tax credit while achieving a cleaner, safer, and often faster-charging setup.
Filing Your Taxes
Regardless of which charger you choose, you must keep the original purchase receipt and the itemized invoice from your electrician. Use our ev charger tax credit calculator to run your numbers, and file IRS Form 8911 when it is time to submit your tax return.
